Malaria free Big 5

The Big Five and scores of other wildlife roam free around Morokolo Game Lodge, set deep in the Black Rhino Game Reserve.

Morokolo Game Lodge sits on the northern slopes of the Pilanesberg mountains in the Black Rhino Game Reserve, which was recently incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. The area carries one of the richest varieties of African wildlife, predators, fauna and flora on the continent, and the Big Five roam free around the lodge. It is two and a half hours' drive from Johannesburg.

Morokolo is the Setswana name for the indigenous num-num tree, which grows in and around the lodges.

Activities

Activities in and around Morokolo

The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of the greater Pilanesberg National Park measuring 57 000 hectares. Situated in the north-western corner of the Pilanesberg National Park, the Black Rhino Reserve is just under 2 500 hectares in size and represents the first portion of private land incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. It is a private concession with its own entrance on the north-western side of the park.

Elephant, buffalo and a variety of antelope often roam in this area as they take shelter in remote areas not accessible to other visitors to the Pilanesberg National Park. Characterised by a beautiful forest of Tamboti trees and occasional sightings of the bad-tempered black rhino, the Black Rhino Reserve is home to the Big 5 — lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, white and black rhino — as well as a wide variety of antelope species including sable, tsessebe, eland, kudu and springbok, and the rare sightings of wild dog. With a species list of over 354, the Black Rhino Reserve is also a true birders’ paradise.

On-site activities

One professionally guided Big 5 vehicle safari, included in the room rates, each day will keep you in awe of the splendid natural beauty of the Black Rhino Reserve and the Pilanesberg National Park. Elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, wild dogs, kudus, wildebeest, warthogs and spring hares are but a few of the more commonly seen animals.

Walking safaris are available. The walk focuses on locating and observing the inhabitants of the Black Rhino Game Reserve from a different angle — on foot. Guests are accompanied by a qualified guide who will share their extensive knowledge and experience on both fauna and flora. Excursions depart in the early morning or early afternoon.

Area activities

Located on the slopes of the Pilanesberg mountains, Morokolo is 35 km from Sun City and 51 km from Pilanesberg International Airport.

  • Hot air ballooning: fly in hot air balloons within this unique location with all its scenic beauty and wildlife, only 35 minutes’ drive from the lodge.
  • Valley of Waves at Sun City: the most advanced water park in South Africa. The Roaring Lagoon is the centre of the park, where a regular 1.2 metre wave crashes on the white sandy beach. A meandering river allows for a scenic tube ride, and for adrenaline seekers there are five water rides including the Temple of Courage.
  • Golf: Sun City can lay claim to two of the best golf courses in Africa, both designed by Gary Player. The Lost City Golf Course offers spectacular views across the bushveld, notable bunkers and water features — and at the 13th hole, 38 crocodiles await. The par 72 course at the Gary Player Country Club is home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge. The pro shop, putting green and health spa are open seven days a week.
  • Quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and archery: only 35 km from the lodge in the Sun City complex.

Directions

Head towards Sun City on the R556 and pass by the entrance to Sun City on the right. Continue for 5.11 km to the T-junction and turn right onto the R565 (Swartruggens). Continue on this road for approximately 27 km through a small village (beware of potholes) until you arrive at the Black Rhino Game Reserve entrance on the right.

Sign in at the gate and either drive on directly to the lodge, or request that we collect you from the gate if you do not want to drive your car on the dirt roads. A standard clearance sedan should be able to reach Morokolo Game Lodge (No 19 Black Rhino Reserve) without difficulty.

From the Black Rhino Game Reserve gate, drive for 2.9 km along the road until you meet an intersection, then continue straight for 500 m until you see our lodge on the right: No 19 Black Rhino Reserve.
