Malaria free Big 5

Black Rhino Game Lodge is a hidden treasure set among the trees of the Black Rhino Game Reserve, a private concession within the Pilanesberg National Park.

The Lodge is set amongst the trees of an old Tamboti forest at the foot of an ancient volcanic crater that today comprises one of South Africa's most exciting Big 5 eco-tourism destinations, the greater Pilanesberg National Park.

Located on the west side of the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park and only 33 km from Sun City, the lodge is built between a Tamboti forest and a busy waterhole — a hive of bird and animal activity, and a playground for elephant. On many occasions the stillness of the night is broken by the roaring of lions, and the francolins sing the morning wake-up call.

Accommodation

Four Luxury Suites and nineteen Suites. Each of the nineteen Suites is generously spacious, with a large bedroom and a comfortable living area opening onto a private veranda over the bushveld. Suites include tea and coffee-making facilities, a minibar, and a Smart TV with Netflix, Showmax and YouTube. The four Luxury Suites add a private hot tub or plunge pool, and a Nespresso machine. Beds convert to twins on request. Suites 18, 19, 21 and 22 sit next to each other and suit families travelling together. Suite 17 is closest to the lodge and better for older guests or anyone with walking difficulties. Suites 11 and 12 inter-lead via a lockable hallway, each with its own entrance.

Game drives run in open-sided 4x4 vehicles with experienced rangers, early morning and late afternoon when animals are most active. Guided walking safaris are available at additional cost — booking essential.

Climate Conditions

The Pilanesberg offers unique safari experiences throughout the year, with each season bringing its own highlights and considerations.

Summer (October – March)

Summer in the Pilanesberg is marked by warmer temperatures, ranging from 26°C to 30°C, and more frequent rainfall, with the region receiving around 622 mm during this period. While the landscape becomes lush and green, which is ideal for photography, the dense vegetation can make wildlife harder to spot. Nonetheless, summer offers beautiful scenery and the opportunity to see young animals born after the rains.

Winter (April – September)

In winter, controlled burns may occur in certain areas of the park as part of veld management. These are carefully monitored and essential to maintaining the ecological balance. Winter is also a particularly good time to spot lions, as they tend to be less cautious and more visible during the day.

What to wear

Summer clothing: lightweight clothing and swimwear as well as a light jacket for game drives.

Winter clothing: lightweight clothing and swimwear for daytime and a warm insulated jacket, beanie and scarf for game drives.

Game Drives

Morning game drives are into the Pilanesberg National Park. Afternoon game drives are on the Black Rhino Game Reserve.

  • Seasonal times are in place for game drive departures. Please enquire.
  • Guests should arrive at least half an hour before the afternoon game drive. Vehicles cannot be held back after the allotted departure time.
  • The morning drive includes a coffee stop. Coffee is taken along by the ranger.
  • Afternoon drives include a sundowner stop. Drinks orders are taken during high tea by the rangers. This drink is optional, not included, and payable.
  • Ponchos are available on drives and blankets are provided during winter and other cold times.
  • Game drives are totally weather dependent and cannot be refunded.
  • Children under the age of six are not permitted on a game drive; children between six and twelve are at the ranger’s discretion. Should a child be noisy or disturbing other guests, the ranger has the right to reprimand the child or parent. If the situation continues, the game drive can be cut short and the child will not be allowed on the next drive. Baby-sitting services are available at an extra charge and must be pre-arranged for meals and game drives. Please enquire.
  • Bush bumbles are offered for children who cannot join a game drive.
  • Although the reserve and the national park boast the Big 5, sightings cannot be guaranteed due to the animals roaming free and the size of the reserve and the national park. The rangers take great care to look for them and offer all guests an enjoyable and informative game drive.
  • No off-road driving is allowed to get close-ups of animals; all vehicles must stay on the demarcated roads.
  • The open safari vehicles can accommodate 10 passengers plus the driver. Every occupant must occupy a seat. No lap sitting is allowed.
  • The lodge has three splash pools. Pool towels are provided.

Game Drive Times

Summer - Morning Game Drives  - 5-30 and Afternoon Game Drives - 15-30

Winter - Morning Game Drives  - 6-00 and Afternoon Game Drives - 15-00

Season

The best time to visit the Pilanesberg is from the middle of July to the middle of October (during late winter, spring or early summer). The reason for this is that animals take longer to feed in the winter months, as there is less nutrition. The mating season, which occurs from late February onwards, is something worth seeing as well. From January, however, viewing the dense bush proves to be an arduous task.

In winter, the days are clear and warm. The evenings tend to be very cold in comparison. In the winter time, some areas of the park have to be burned. This is known as a controlled fire, and it is necessary as part of veld management.

The winter months are, however, a great time to see some lions. They don’t take as much notice of tourists and cars as they would in another season. Even though they don’t take as much notice, stay in your car at all times. The animals are used to vehicles, but if you leave the car you pose as a threat to them. Don’t hoot at the animals either, as they will get startled and run off.
