Getting to the Black Rhino Game Reserve

Around two and a half hours from Johannesburg

The Pilanesberg lies roughly 200 km north-west of Johannesburg. The Black Rhino Game Reserve is entered through its own private gate on the north-western side of the park, not through the public gates.

Driving from Johannesburg

Budget around two and a half hours from central Johannesburg in normal traffic. The most straightforward route runs north-west via the N4 and R556. The prettier alternative goes via Hartbeespoort Dam and through the Magaliesberg — slightly longer, considerably more scenic, and it puts the cableway and the farm stalls on your route.

Driving from Pretoria

Similar distance and time, generally via the N4 west and then north on the R556.

Transfers

If you would rather not drive, road transfers run from all three airports and from Johannesburg and Pretoria hotels. Fly-in transfers to Pilanesberg International can also be arranged. See transfer options or mention it in your enquiry.

Timing your arrival

Two things worth knowing:

  • Entry into the Pilanesberg is restricted from one hour before the gate closing time. Arriving at dusk is not a plan.
  • Gate times shift with the season. Check the current times in the footer of this site, or on the park information page, before you travel.

Aim to arrive by mid-afternoon. That gets you checked in, settled and onto the sunset game drive — which is the drive you came for.

Road conditions and vehicles

The approach roads are tarred and a normal sedan is fine. Roads inside the reserve are a mix of tar and gravel and are also passable in a standard car, though a vehicle with reasonable ground clearance is more comfortable. Game drives at the lodges use open 4x4s regardless.

Your lodge will send exact directions and GPS coordinates with your confirmation. If you want them in advance, just ask.
